About Each Test

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is available in Academic and General Training versions. It tests Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking, with scores from Band 1 to 9 in 0.5 increments. IELTS is accepted by over 11,000 organizations in 140+ countries, including universities, employers, and immigration authorities.

PTE Academic

Pearson Test of English Academic is a fully computer-based test scored from 10 to 90. It uses AI for grading, which provides consistent results and fast turnaround (typically 2 business days). PTE is popular for Australian immigration and accepted by thousands of universities worldwide.

TOEFL iBT

Test of English as a Foreign Language (internet-based) scores from 0 to 120 (30 points per section). Created by ETS, it is primarily recognized by North American universities but accepted globally. The test emphasizes academic English and integrates all four skills.

CEFR

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is not a test but a standardized scale (A1 to C2) used to describe language proficiency. Most English tests map their scores to CEFR levels, making it useful for comparing different exams and understanding requirements.

Cambridge English

Cambridge Assessment English offers exams like B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and C2 Proficiency (CPE). Scores range from 80 to 230 on the Cambridge English Scale. These exams are widely recognized in Europe and provide lifelong qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What IELTS band is PTE 30?

PTE 30-35 is equivalent to IELTS Band 4.0-4.5, TOEFL 32-34, and CEFR A2+. This level indicates basic English proficiency suitable for limited everyday communication.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

Neither test is inherently easier. PTE is fully computer-based with AI grading, which some learners prefer for its consistency and fast results. IELTS has a face-to-face speaking component with a human examiner. Your best choice depends on your strengths and preferences.

What CEFR level is IELTS 5.0?

IELTS 5.0 corresponds to CEFR B1, PTE 36-42, and TOEFL 35-45. This represents an intermediate level where you can handle familiar situations but may struggle with complex topics.

Do universities accept PTE instead of IELTS?

Most universities accept both PTE and IELTS. Over 3,000 institutions worldwide accept PTE Academic, including Harvard, Yale, and many Australian, UK, and Canadian universities. Always check your target institution's specific requirements.

What IELTS score do I need for Band 7 universities?

Universities requiring "Band 7" typically need IELTS 7.0, which equals PTE 65-72, TOEFL 94-101, or CEFR B2+. Some competitive programs may require 7.5 or higher, especially for writing-intensive courses.

How do TOEFL and IELTS scores compare?

TOEFL 100 roughly equals IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 80 equals IELTS 6.5, and TOEFL 60 equals IELTS 5.5-6.0. Both are widely accepted, but IELTS is more common for UK/Australia and TOEFL for US/Canada.

Can I convert my Cambridge score to IELTS?

Yes. Cambridge 180-184 equals IELTS 7.0, Cambridge 173-179 equals IELTS 6.5, and Cambridge 169-172 equals IELTS 6.0. Cambridge scores are mapped to the same CEFR levels as IELTS bands.
