Skimming Strategies for IELTS Reading
Read Faster Without Missing Key Information
With only 60 minutes to read three passages and answer 40 questions, you simply cannot afford to read every word carefully in the IELTS Reading test. This is where skimming becomes essential.
What is Skimming?
Skimming is the technique of reading quickly to understand the general idea of a text. Unlike detailed reading, you're not trying to understand every word. Instead, you're looking for the "big picture": what the passage is about, how it's structured, and where key information is located.
When to Use Skimming
Use skimming at these key moments:
- First read of each passage: Spend 2-3 minutes skimming before looking at questions
- Finding paragraph topics: Especially useful for matching headings questions
- Locating information: When you need to find where a topic is discussed
How to Skim Effectively
Follow these steps for efficient skimming:
1. Read the Title and Any Subheadings
These tell you the main topic immediately. Don't skip them.
2. Read the First Paragraph Carefully
The introduction often contains the thesis or main argument. This paragraph deserves more attention than others.
3. Read First Sentences of Body Paragraphs
Topic sentences are usually at the beginning. Read these to understand each paragraph's focus.
4. Look for Signal Words
Words like "however," "therefore," "in contrast," and "importantly" signal key points. Slow down when you see these.
5. Note Names, Numbers, and Dates
These are often asked about in questions. Don't read them in detail yet, but notice where they appear.
6. Read the Conclusion
The final paragraph often summarizes the main points or presents the author's conclusion.
Common Skimming Mistakes
Avoid these errors that slow you down:
- Subvocalizing: Don't "speak" the words in your head. This limits you to speaking speed.
- Re-reading: Keep moving forward. You'll come back for details when answering questions.
- Getting stuck on unknown words: Skip them for now. Context will often clarify meaning later.
Practice Exercise
Try this: Set a timer for 3 minutes. Skim a passage and write down:
- The main topic in one sentence
- The main point of each paragraph in 3-5 words
With practice, you'll find this becomes faster and more accurate.
Final Tip
Skimming is a skill that improves with practice. Start by timing yourself and gradually reduce the time you spend. Most successful test-takers can skim a full passage in 2-3 minutes.
